For Better Or Worse

You can’t change your body,
Not your appearance,
Not your strengths,
Or your weaknesses.

You can’t change your brain,
Not your intelligence,
Not your memories ,
Or your emotions.

And you obviously,
Can’t change your heart.
But who you love,
Can and will!

I just hope—
He treats you right,
And you’re fair.
So that he doesn’t ruin you,
For the rest of us.

So please guard your heart,
Because everything else—
Depends on it.

Listen to Tasha Layton—Into The Sea Song

Commentary: One of the problems is that a lot of toxic relationship habits are baked into our culture. We worship romantic love—you know, that dizzying and irrational kind. Men and women are encouraged to objectify each other and to objectify their romantic relationships. Thus, our partners are often seen as achievements or prizes rather than someone to share mutual emotional support.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Bible, Proverbs 4:23

Read How to nurture a love that “would stand as a firm wall,” that “won’t let you fall, and it gives warmth.”
